Victorian law

Possum trapping Mornington Peninsula: what the law allows

Both the common brushtail and the ringtail possum are protected wildlife under the Wildlife Act 1975. A brushtail living in a building may be caught in a cage trap, but the rules on what happens next are strict, and they apply on the Peninsula exactly as they do in the city.

A caught brushtail must be let go on the same property, within 50 metres of where it was trapped, after sunset on the day of capture. Taking it to a reserve or the bush is not permitted, however kind that sounds. If release is not reasonably possible, for example because the animal is injured, it goes to a registered vet.

  • Cages checked no later than two hours after sunrise
  • Ringtails cannot be trapped without authority from DEECA
  • Release on the same property, within 50 metres
  • Ultrasonic units and repellents do little to deter brushtails

How possum trapping works when nobody is home

The law sets the timetable, so we plan the visit around it.

1

Set

We fit the cage at the entry in the afternoon, after closing other gaps so the possum uses that route.

2

Check

The cage is checked no later than two hours after sunrise, by us or someone you nominate.

3

Hold

A caught brushtail is kept covered, quiet and shaded on the property through the day.

4

Release

After sunset it is let go within 50 metres of the capture point, close to where it has been living.

5

Seal

The entry it used is repaired straight away, so the roof is shut when it goes looking again.

For owners who are away

A possum man Mornington Peninsula owners can leave with the key

About 27.5% of homes in the Shire were empty on Census night 2021, and in Blairgowrie the figure was 65.2%. A cage in the roof of an empty house is a problem, because someone has to check it early every morning and be there after dark to release.

So we take that on. We collect the key from you, your agent or a neighbour, check the cage ourselves and handle the release on your block after sunset. You get a message each step of the way.

  • Morning cage checks by our team
  • Release carried out on your property after dark
  • Photos of the possum leaving and the entry repaired
  • Key returned the way you choose

Four things to ask any possum catcher

01

Where will it be released?

The only lawful answer for a brushtail is on your property, within 50 metres, after sunset. An offer to take it away is an offer the law does not allow.

02

Who checks the cage?

Traps must be checked no later than two hours after sunrise. If nobody is staying at the house, ask who will do it.

03

Is the roof fixed afterwards?

A released brushtail goes straight back to the gap it knows. Without repairs you are paying for the same possum twice.

04

Is it actually a brushtail?

Ringtails cannot be trapped without DEECA authority. A proper catcher identifies the species before any cage goes out.

Questions

Possum catcher Mornington Peninsula FAQs

Unsure whether you need a cage or a door? Describe the roof and we will tell you.

Call 0478 661 110
How much does a possum catcher on the Mornington Peninsula cost?

Removal by cage or one way door, with a return visit, starts from $270 including GST. With roof repairs it starts from $429.

Is possum trapping Mornington Peninsula legal?

Yes, for a brushtail living in a building, as long as it is released on the same property, within 50 metres, after sunset on the day it is caught.

Can I find possum trap hire through the Shire?

No. Mornington Peninsula Shire does not loan or hire possum traps. If you trap one yourself, the same state rules apply to you.

Can a possum man Mornington Peninsula service take the possum away?

No. Moving a possum off the property is not permitted. An empty roof space also stays open to the next possum, so the lasting fix is repairing the entry.

Do you have a possum catcher Frankston residents can book?

Yes. Frankston and Frankston South are covered at the same prices as the rest of the Peninsula.

Can you trap a ringtail possum in my shed?

Not without authority from DEECA. Ringtails rarely live in roofs; they usually nest in dense shrubs, so we identify the species first.

What happens if the possum is injured?

If release is not reasonably possible, the possum goes to a registered vet rather than back outside.

Why release it on my property? Will it not come back?

It will try, which is why we repair the entry the same day. The release rule protects the possum; the repair protects your roof.

Do you use a cage every time?

No. A one way door is often simpler, because the possum leaves by itself and nobody has to handle it.

Who checks the cage at a holiday house?

We do, no later than two hours after sunrise, unless you would rather a neighbour does it with our guidance.

What if the possum has a baby in the pouch?

We look for signs of young before trapping. Brushtail young can be in the pouch for about six months and then ride on the back, so timing matters.
