The Peninsula is not one market. Frankston is a permanent city, while the back beach towns are mostly holiday houses.
Empty for weeks
On Census night more than a quarter of the Shire's homes were unoccupied, and in Portsea it was about three in four. A possum can move in and raise young before anyone hears it.

Many 1960s to 1980s shacks are fibro or weatherboard on stumps with unlined eaves, so there are openings above and below the floor.

The method is the same everywhere: close the spare gaps, fit a one way door on the main one, let the possum leave after dark, then take the door off and repair the last opening.
The difference on the Peninsula is timing. Holiday houses are often discovered weeks after the possum moved in, so there can be soiled insulation, a nest and sometimes young in the roof. We check for young before the door goes on, and if a mother is carrying one we time the job accordingly.
The Shire refers possum questions to the state rules and does not lend traps. A brushtail caught in a building must be released on the same property, within 50 metres, after sunset that day.
