A decomposing possum can smell for weeks if it is left where it is, and the smell rarely stays put. Flies follow, fluids can stain a ceiling or cornice, and the insulation around the body soaks up the odour. Air fresheners and open windows only cover it for a few hours.
The fix is simple in principle: find the body, remove it with the soiled material around it, treat the area, and close the hole the possum used so the next one does not end up in the same spot.
