No handling, no trap checks, and the possum stays on its own territory, which is what Victorian law expects anyway.
A cage is used when a door will not work, for example a possum inside a wall cavity with no single exit, one that has found its way into the living area, or a roof with too many openings to door. Then the rules are strict: the trap is checked no later than two hours after sunrise, and the brushtail is released on the same property, within 50 metres of where it was caught, after sunset on the day of capture.

Brushtail possum trapping rules in Geelong
Both common possums are protected under the Wildlife Act 1975. A brushtail living in a building may be trapped, but it must be released on the same property, within 50 metres of capture, after sunset on the day it was caught. Relocation to a park, the You Yangs or the bush along the Barwon is not permitted, however kind it sounds.
If release is not reasonably possible, for example the possum is injured, it must go to a registered vet. Ringtails cannot be trapped at all without authority from DEECA.
