Dead possum smell and the other signs
Most of these are found the first day back at a house that has been shut for a while.
A sweet, heavy smell
Strongest in one room or along one wall, and worse on a warm day.
Flies inside the house
Blowflies at a window or light fitting with no obvious source.
A stain on the ceiling
A spreading brown mark on the plaster below the body.
Sudden silence
Noise in the roof over earlier visits that has now stopped.
Maggots or larvae

A possum smell in a holiday house you have just opened
On Census night in 2021, around three in four homes in Portsea sat empty, along with about 65% in Blairgowrie and more than half in Rye. A possum that dies in one of those roofs can lie there for weeks before anyone opens the front door.
By then the smell has soaked into insulation and sometimes plaster, flies have hatched, and the ceiling below may be stained. The odour of a decomposing possum can hang around for weeks even after it has dried out, so leaving it to fade is rarely a good plan when you want to use the house.
We work out where it is before cutting or lifting anything. Most are in the roof above a bedroom or hallway, a few are in a wall cavity, and on stumped shacks around Rosebud, Rye and Capel Sound we find them under the floor.

In the roof space
The most common place. We reach it through the manhole or by lifting tiles, then clean and treat the spot.
Inside a wall cavity
Harder to reach. We narrow the spot down first, then make the smallest opening we can and patch it.

In the eaves or gutter

How long does a dead possum smell last in a Peninsula house?

Left alone, often several weeks, and longer in a wet, closed up house. The Peninsula is the wettest of our three regions, with about 706 mm of rain a year at Cerberus, and damp insulation holds a smell well.
Removing the body and the material it lay on takes away the source, and the odour treatment speeds up the rest. Airing the house for a day or two afterwards helps. If a ceiling has been badly stained we will tell you, and quote it separately.
If we find live young in the roof, we do not leave them. Dependent young cannot be released on their own, so they go to a registered vet.

Check other gaps along the ridge, valleys and eaves.
