How to possum proof a roof properly

Possum proofing means closing every opening a brushtail could use, with materials it cannot chew or push aside. A brushtail can squeeze through a gap about 7 cm across, so the list is usually longer than people expect: loose ridge capping, a cracked tile, an open eave, a vent without mesh, the end of a box gutter.
It has to happen in the right order. If a possum is living in the roof, a one way door goes on its entry first and the rest of the roof is closed around it. The door comes off and that last hole is sealed only once the roof is empty. Proofing a roof with the animal still inside traps it, and a trapped possum will tear at plaster and wiring to get out.
Done well, proofing is what stops the cycle of one possum leaving and the next one moving into the same warm cavity.
