How long does a dead possum smell last?
Reviewed by the Possum Protect VIC team, updated September 2026
A decomposing possum can smell for weeks, and warm weather makes it worse. Air fresheners only mask it for a few hours. The smell fades properly only once the body and everything it has soaked into are gone.
We follow the smell, stains and flies to the spot, remove the possum along with the soiled insulation and nest material around it, and treat the area for odour. Most homes notice a clear difference within a day or two of the visit.
Then we look at why it was there. A possum that died in your roof got in somewhere, and other possums will find the same gap unless it is repaired.
| Dead possum removal | From $275, odour treatment included |

Dead possum smell and the other signs
The smell usually arrives first. These are the signs that tell us where to look.

A sweet, rotten smell
Strongest in one room, often worse in the afternoon when the roof warms up.
Flies indoors
Blowflies gathering at a window, a downlight or a ceiling vent in one room.
A stain on the plaster
A brown or yellow patch spreading on the ceiling or high on a wall.
The noise has stopped
Thumping you used to hear at night has gone quiet in the last week or two.
A recent repair or blocked gap
Someone patched a hole in the roof and a possum was still inside.
Maggots or larvae
Small larvae dropping from a light fitting or cornice, a late but clear sign.
Dead possum in roof or wall cavity: where it hides in Melbourne houses
Where the smell comes from depends a lot on how the house was built.
Terrace rows
In Carlton, Collingwood and South Melbourne the roof space runs over party walls. A possum can die over the neighbour side and the smell still arrives in your front bedroom.
Weatherboard cottages
In Footscray, Braybrook and West Melbourne the open eaves feed a continuous wall cavity. A dead possum in wall cavity spaces often shows as a stain low on a wall rather than on the ceiling.
Interwar brick and tile
In Brighton East, Cheltenham and Oakleigh South the hip roofs have room to move around, so we can usually reach the possum from the manhole without cutting anything.
Estate homes
In Truganina, Laverton and Hallam the low pitched roofs leave little space near the eaves. We explain the access before we start and price any ceiling work first.
Dead possum removal Melbourne in five steps
One visit covers the removal, the clean and the odour treatment. The repair can often be done the same day.
Trace
Smell, flies, stains and droppings followed through the roof space or wall to the source.
Remove
Possum lifted out and double bagged, with gloves and masks, for proper disposal.
Clean
Soiled insulation and nest material cleared and the surfaces sanitised.
Deodorise
Odour treatment applied to the area and the surrounding roof space.
Close
The gap it came through found and repaired, or priced for a return visit.

Dead possum removal plus roof repairs, same crew
A dead possum is a sign of an open roof. It got in through a lifted tile, a loose ridge cap, an open eave or a box gutter end, and others will follow the same route.
Because our team does structural roof repairs as well as possum work, the entry can be fixed while we are already up there. Tiles are replaced, capping rebedded, fascia and barge boards renewed and steel mesh fitted.
- Entry found and photographed
- Repair priced on the spot, before any work
- Two year written guarantee on sealed points
- Live possums let out with a one way door, never sealed in
What to do about a dead possum smell before we arrive
Close the room off
Shut the door of the worst room and open a window there if you can.
Do not handle it bare handed
If you can see the possum, leave it for us or use thick gloves and a sealed bag.
Do not cut the ceiling
Stains show where fluid has soaked through, not always where the body is. Guessing can mean more plaster repairs.
Hold off on sprays
Fragrance sprays mask the smell for a few hours but make the source harder to find by nose.

Dead possum removal Melbourne questions
Tell us where the smell is worst and how long it has been there. That usually tells us where to start.
Call 0478 661 110Is there dead possum removal near me this week?
Usually yes. Send your suburb and we will offer the soonest daylight booking, seven days a week.
What is the dead possum removal cost in Melbourne?
Dead possum removal starts from $275 including GST, with odour treatment included. Nest clean out and sanitising starts from $220.
How do you find a dead possum in roof spaces?
We follow the smell, fly activity, stains and droppings, then work through the roof space from the manhole toward the source.
Can you remove a dead possum in wall cavity spaces?
Yes. We try to reach it from the roof space first. If the wall must be opened, we show you where and price it before cutting.
How long does a dead possum smell last if I leave it?
It can linger for weeks, with flies, staining and soiled insulation along the way. Removal and treatment shortens that a great deal.
Why did a possum die in my roof?
Common reasons are old age, illness or being sealed in when a gap was blocked. A mother may also leave young behind.
Will the smell go completely after removal?
In most homes it drops sharply within a day or two. Heavily stained plaster can hold a faint smell longer and may need replacing.
Do you replace soiled insulation?
We remove the soiled insulation around the possum as part of the job. Replacing a larger area is quoted separately.
Can my council remove a dead possum from my roof?
Councils such as Boroondara, Whitehorse, Glen Eira and Knox do not remove possums from private roofs, so this is work for the homeowner or a private operator.
Is it a possum or a rat that died?
A possum smell is stronger and lasts longer, and the stain is bigger. We confirm when we find it.
Will you fix the hole it came in through?
Yes. We are possum handymen, so the tile, capping, eave or fascia it used can be repaired, with a two year written guarantee.
Can you check whether other possums are still living up there?
Yes. If a live possum is still using the roof, we fit a one way door before closing that entry.
